Here are some tips to help you improve your skills:

• Play tight---especially if you are a beginner.  This is not a game of luck; it is a game of strategy.  Nevertheless, it is always helpful to start off with a strong hand, so you need to be patient and only loosen up a bit when you get a strong hand.  Many players empty their bankrolls on games they will probably never win just because they are too impatient to wait on a better hand to come along!  You can also turn the tables on others by only playing against opponents who play loosely themselves.  It will be easier for you to take their money from them.

• Always play in accordance to your position.  Poker requires a great deal of focus, so always be aware of what is going on at all times.  The player who acts last always has an advantage over others; so if you end up in an early position, you should not play aggressively.  Even if you have very good cards, you should be careful about betting and raising.  The one advantage of playing online is that, if you play in an early position, you will not have to worry about other players trying to read your expression.

• Always try to create winning combinations.  If you are completely new to poker, have a chart opened up in another browser window.  You need to know at all times what cards you will need to make a combination good enough to beat your opponent(s).  If your starting cards are so random that you don't see any chance of coming out with a winning hand, go ahead and fold and get it over with.  It is better to be safe than sorry.

• Do not try playing too many hands before the flop.  Be careful, or else you will end up with a losing hand and empty bankroll.  Many of the world's best poker players only stick around for flops 10% of the time.  If you are playing in a late position with a hand you are not comfortable with, and an opponent raises before your first turn, you should consider folding.  Do not overestimate medium or even J pairs for that matter.  They are not always that great.
