Winning Sit And Go Strategy
One of the most lucrative types of poker games to play online is the sit and go. In this type or tourney, you have the opportunity to build your bankroll quickly by using a few simple poker strategies. Two of the best strategies to implement in a sit and go are hand selection and picking the right spots.
Poker Hand Selection
A good understanding of hand selection will help you advance in sit and go tournaments and quite possibly help you reach the money a lot easier. Although choosing top ten hands is obviously the best way to go, this article is more about hands you should NOT play.
Hand selection is the ability to choose the best hand for each situation you find yourself in. For example, in early position, like under the gun, is ideal to limp or min raise with very strong hands, especially if you have a few overly aggressive players that act after you. You can count on those aggressive players raising and therefore giving you an opportunity to get more chips in the pot. Since you have position on an aggressive player, you can always re-raise or trap your opponent.
On the other hand, if you have a weak ace, or hands ranked in the middle (like QJ suited or pocket 5's), you may find that these hands do better in late position, simply because you can disguise your hand when you limp in and hit the flop.
Picking your Spots
An understanding of the type of players in a sit and go is helpful to winning as well. The majority of players in a sit and go are fast playing action junkie type players. They want to quickly accumulate as many poker chips as possible and try to double or triple up in an effort to control the action as the sit and go gets closer to the money.
Although it may sound like good poker strategy, in the long run, these overly aggressive players rarely find themselves making it deep. Because of the nature of the sit and go and the fact that so many people are 'in a hurry', you can selectively pick spots that you want to involve your chips.
The best sit and go strategy is to let the aggressive players steal small pots and try to knock each other out, while you play good position, good cards and pick off their bluffs in the big pots. Using the aggressive and inexperienced players against themselves will ultimately lead to you getting deeper in any sit and go. Make it a point to pick the right spots with appropriate poker hands and make smart moves against your opponents.

Poker Sit and Go Report - Opponent Catgories
You have less than an hour during most sit and go tournaments to find out what your opponents' playing styles are. In some cases you may have to discern that information in less than a few minutes! Surprisingly, there are actually ways to do this.
You may have read about player styles and how they fit into a quadrant first devised by a Ph.D. named Alan Schoonmaker in his landmark book, The Psychology of Poker. The matrix style grid I am referring to in that book, lines up on each axis a tight-loose scale compared to a passive-aggressive scale.
For consideration, a rock solid tight player would be 1,1 on the scale as he is the tightest and most passive of all, and a maniac would be 9,9 having the highest rating for looseness and aggression. You can view the poker profiling grid at this link.
Previously I have written about categorizing your players using an adapted version of Phil Hellmuth's Creature Guide that includes Lion, Elephant, Mouse, Jackyl, and Eagle, along with my own Monkey player profiles. Seems to me a quicker way of identifying your opponents rather than having a grid number like 3,6 attached to player notes. That does not make the grid less valuable, but rather more helpful in placing your opponents more quickly on the grid while giving you somewhat of a double checking sequence.
For instance, if I have identified a mouse at my table, I can pretty much place him in the lower left quadrant as tight and passive. But if later you see him playing J9os in early position you may have to reconsider his grid position and hence his creature profile.
In sit and go poker tournaments you also have to keep in mind that all players will change their persona as the session progresses and players are taking more consideration of their stack, the blinds, and prize money. These factors can turn a mouse into a maniac, and a Lion into a Jackyl! It's not like you are getting a free poker ride to the land on online riches but the creature strategy can help.
