What kind of rowel can you put on a spur that would make it humane?
I got an AQHA mare in the summer and am planning on taking her team penning next year. She is SO amazing. As a gift for good grades my not so horsey parents bought me a set of spurs that I had been eyeing up for a long time (while I was still riding english). I know how much they paid for them and I know that right now they are restricted with money so I want to use them. The only problem is they have rowels in them but they will pop out.
My question: Is there a type of rowel that I can put in them that will be less harmful to my horse? Or if I use them right she should be fine. My coach said something about a "daisy" shaped rowel.

Unless you are talented enough to use steel spikes on the rowels without injuring the tissue, you probably shouldn't use any spurs at all. The concept of "less harmful" when you refer to the use of spurs tends to make my hair stand on end. The only way spurs should be used is when they are not at all harmful, because the heels they are attached to are impeccably trained in their use, and are controlled to a fault.
