Burpees are a great whole body work out. Variations also make the exercise more or less challenging. You can do them as sets with adequate rest, in Tabata intervals, or to failure. There are limitless ways to incorporate this movement into any workout routine.
Another feature of the burpee is that all you need is just your body. No equipment is necessary. All that is required is adequate space and possibly a timer, but this doesn't necessarily mean equipment shouldn't be used. When added, a weighted vest will challenge you to not puke after a few sets.
Whether you're just beginning a workout routine or just want an extra "oomph" into your workout, burpees are an excellent addition. Now without further ado, here are the movements that go into this exercise:
1. Start in the standing position, with your feet shoulder width apart, arms relaxed
2. Squat down, placing your hands on the ground in front of your feet

3. Quickly kick your feet back and at the same time lower yourself. You should be in the down position of a push up.
4. Shoot your knees back to your chest as you push yourself up with your arms into the squat position
5. Jump as high as you can from the squat position
6. End in the standing position
This movement is very similar to a squat thrust. The difference is that at the end of a burpee, you jump as hard as you can. In a squat thrust, you don't jump and just stand back up. This subtle difference builds explosive power in your legs. You should also focus on doing them as quick as possible. If done correctly, burpees can increase your stamina, explosiveness, and strength.
By adding subtracting certain movements, burpees can be a light workout or be so intense that you'll be greeted by the white buffalo. To make them easier, don't do the push up or the jump at the end. To make them more intense, try doing them near a pull up bar and do a pull up after your jump, let go, landing in the starting position. You could also jump forward, jump over, or jump on obstacles. One more variation is to have something to place your feet on as you shoot back, causing your body to incline, thus intensifying the already intense burpee.
Overall, burpees are an assault on all your muscles and a few you didn't even know about. With this in mind, be sure to adequately warm up and cool down when performing burpees. This is the movement that is the stand-by for strength and conditioning trainers. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
