Poker Table Folding

Should you called with A 9 off suit in small blind when middle position raise 4xbb and then 3 more callers? I fold mine and flop came AA9, but that's not important my questions is did I play cards right and what is the best way to play your hand when you in small blind? What are the best starting hands?
You are smart to realize that the outcome of the hand ("I woulda flopped a fullhouse...") is not important. The decision to fold preflop is what's important.

As far as I'm concerned folding A9 in the sb to a raise and a bunch of callers is absolutely the right decision. There are so many hands that potentially have you completely dominated in that situation, calling will never be the right play. You would be stuck out of position for the rest of the hand, and if you were to flop an ace, what are the chances that you actually hold the best ace? Not good.
When in the sb, you need to look for reasons to fold, not play. Facing a raise and 3 callers holding a weak ace is easily a good enough reason to fold, especially early in a tournament where I imagine you're not a short stack. There will be many other better spots to get your chips in.
