This is why, when your child shops for his first home, understanding how much space is available in a 9'x8' room is important. A vacant home will appear larger to the buyer until he begins to move his furniture into his home and realizes that it doesn't fit well. Knowledge of geometry will help your child make wise decisions.

Algebra

One of the first big purchases your child will probably make is a car. Understanding how to calculate a car payment is important when deciding on a car budget. Algebra teaches a student how to logically solve a multi-faceted problem. Understanding how to look at a problem and logically figure out what value is unknown is a vital life skill.

Percentages and Fractions

Algebra is not the only math skill used when buying a car. Understanding percentages is an important part of understanding interest rates. Often car dealers will get the buyer to focus on the monthly payment, rather than the interest rate the buyer will be paying. This is because the interest rate is where the bank makes its money. When an inexperienced buyer focuses only on the monthly payment and not on the interest rate, that buyer can end up paying more money to the bank and getting a lower value vehicle. Interest rates are also important when looking at how to invest savings. Savings accounts have different interest rates, and knowing how to shop for a good interest rate is important. Budgets, savings plans, and even cooking are all everyday areas where your child will use his math skills.

Statistics

If your child is a sports fan, he probably already has a pretty good knowledge of statistics. From understanding what his odds are in a friendly game of poker to knowing the batting average of a favorite player, statistics are an important part of the sports culture. It is also important for your child to understand how statistics are formed. The media is famous for quoting statistics that support a story, but sometimes statistics can be misleading. Understanding how statistics are created, used, and sometimes abused is an important part of picking through the myriad of facts available in the media.

Understanding higher-level math is vital in the real world.
