What is the purpose of my hand in a game of poker?

I am new to poker, I have finally mastered the rankings, and the hands. But I still don't understand what am I trying to do with my cards? With my hand? Am I trying to compare it to the guys sitting across from me hoping I have a better hand? and what is the purpose of the flop, or dealers cards, what do my my cards have to do with the "flop"? Do I want to match my cards with the flop in some kind of sequential order? or hope they beat his flop cards as well? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

When you are dealt two cards you are either trying to beat your opponents by having a better hand or try to bluff them out which is different. Ok you get dealt your two cards and you have another player in the hand. Your goal is to try to take that opponents chips by beating them with a better hand or by bluffing him out.

Ok the flop comes which is three cards out on the table that anyone can use. What you are try to do is make the best 5 card hand possible with your two whole cards and the cards on the table. In the order it goes

-The Flop
-The Turn
-The River and or 5th street.

Ok with your two cards you make the best 5 card hand with the 5 cards on the table. You can either use 1 card and 4 on the table. Both your hole cards and the 3 on the table or in rare occurrences, both players use all 5 and split the pot. So with your question on what your cards have to do, you have to at least match them like your said with a pair etc. Or you can get a straight by having 5 cards in numerical order. Or you can make a flush which 5 cards that are in the same suit.

I hope this helps!

How to Play Omaha Hi Lo Poker

Omaha Hi Lo Poker is one of the most popular hold'em style poker games being played today. Texas holdem poker has enjoyed a long run of popularity, but poker players are always on the lookout for variations of a game that can make playing more fun and profitable. Omaha Hi Lo Poker is one of those games.

There are a few differences between the two games of Texas Holdem and Omaha Hi Lo. One difference between the two card games is the number of cards dealt. In both games, players are trying to make the best five-card hand out of their own individual hand and the community cards. However, in Texas holdem, players are dealt two cards face down and five cards in the flop, or community. In Omaha Hi Lo, players get four cards down to start with and then five cards which are face up. There are three rounds of betting, and this varies depending upon your chosen game structure. Players must make the best hand using two cards from among their pocket cards and three cards from the flop.

Each player must use exactly two of their pocket cards and 3 cards from the board; at the showdown, each player can use any two pocket cards for their high hand and any two pocket cards for their low hand. Often this is the most difficult part for a new Omaha Hi Lo player to grasp.

The other primary difference between the two games is that Omaha Hi Lo rewards the lowest hand (a straight up to an eight high) and the highest hand according to traditional poker rankings. If no player has a valid low hand, then the winner of the high hand wins the whole pot. In Omaha Hi Low, a single player may hold both the highest and the lowest hands and win both of the pots.
