Poker and girlfriend?
I've been playing poker for about 3 years, and watching it on TV for about 6 years. I am currently 20 years old.
When I turn 21, I would like to enter the World Series of Poker to try my luck at first place.
To all the skeptics, I realize this is a huge long shot, but I plan on hopefully winning satellites to win a seat.
My girlfriend and I talk about poker every now and then (she likes to play also for fun.) Tonight I brought up a hypothetical situation which was how we would spend the money if we won a good amount, (atleast 500k+)
She flat out said that I would not only never place in the money in my whole life, but I would never get close.
Now having the big ego I have, that statement really hurt.
I plan to marry this person, but statements like that sometimes make me wonder what is the point when I could probably find someone that would support me either way.
Do any of you have a similar situation and how do you handle it?
This isn't so much a gambling question as it is a relationship question. Have you put your question there?
To play devil's advocate here: Bear in mind that even CASHING in such an event as the WSOP is a pretty staggering feat. I believe it's about 1 in 10 players who do, and a good portion of them are professionals, the majority of them are highly experienced players. Getting anywhere even NEAR the final table is pretty close to a miracle.
That said, it's not impossible.

My girlfriend and I are both very interested in poker as well, probably similarly to how you and your girlfriend are. But every time I've entered a tournament, no matter how staggering the odds, she's been supportive (with a slightly realistic slant, reminding me "it's more important to have fun than to win").
I'm just going to leave it there, and remind you that you are 21 years old, not exactly the most applicable age for planning marriage.
