Can I organize home poker tournaments in Virginia?

I want to know the rules/laws governing home poker in Virgina. I realize that a lot of people organize such events but am not sure if they are legal.

In almost every state it is legitimate and legal to have a home game in which friends play for low stakes. It becomes illegal if you charge a 'rake' or entry fee, or if the people playing are not known to you or are meeting solely for the purpose of gambling. Also once you start getting into higher stakes it can arouse a lot more interest from law enforcement and criminal alike.

It is a great weekend for friends and family to gather but you are not quite sure as to how you will entertain them. One good option you might want to consider is to run a Home Texas Holdem Tournament. Doing so will make friends and family engage in a fast-paced and action packed card game that will keep them entertained for hours and hours on end.

One of the things you will need to consider if you are planning to run a Home Texas Holdem Tournament is the cap or limit that you plan to impose on the cost of playing a Texas Holdem Poker game. This is necessary so you can advise players on how much they can expect to lose while playing in your tournament.

You can also choose between running a No Limits Texas Holdem home tournament and one that has limits. If you are after fast playing, no limits Texas Holdem is definitely the answer. However, if your friends or family prefer a friendlier environment, a tournament of Texas Holdem Poker with limits would be ideal.

You will then need to consider the payouts. You can run a home tournament with $35 buy-in. This means that if you have 8 players sitting on the table, the first placer can take home 50% of the prize pool, and the second and third placers can take home 30% and 20% respectively. So the payouts would be $140, $84, and $56.

Running a Home Texas Holdem Tournament can be lots of fun. Just see to it that everyone is having fun and tension is not kindled while playing. Of course, be ready with chips and soda to keep everyone filled while they try their luck on the poker table. And as the weekend comes to a close, be ready to congratulate winners and celebrate.
