Part I – Eat to Stay Awake and Focused
Have you ever felt drowsy and slow after a particularly rich meal? Do you find you concentrate better after having a small snack? Think about when you play long tourneys: do you find your concentration flagging right before the dinner break, or a short while after coming back?
The sugar in your blood (glucose, for the scientifically-minded) provides fuel for all your body cells, and this includes your brain cells. If there is too little sugar in the blood, the brain does not have enough energy to run on and this makes you feel tired, sleepy and irritable and unable to concentrate. Wait! Eating candy bars nonstop for the length of your tourney or grind session is NOT the solution for this.

The level of sugar in the blood must stay within certain limits, and the body uses insulin to regulate this level: when there is excess glucose in the blood, the body produces insulin to convert the sugar into fat and store it.
This tends to work against you when you have a sugary drink or snack for “energy”: when you have that glass of soda to “wake you up” you will feel alert for a few minutes until the insulin kicks in and stores the excess sugar… leaving you with a low glucose level again and drowsier than before. Some foods that have this effect include fizzy drinks, ice-cream, all white flour products (including bread and pasta), and all sugary sweets such as candy, jam and cookies.
So what should you do when you’re in the middle of an epic online session and you feel your energy flagging? Stay away from the pop and chocolate chip cookies! Instead of sweet treats, try eating slow-digesting carbs which will not flood your system with sugar all at once, but will instead release it slowly, keeping you awake and energetic for a longer time. These carbohydrates can be found in wholegrain bread, cereals such as muesli and porridge, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, fruit, vegetables, diluted fruit juices and sugar free sports drinks.
Let’s face it: brown rice and wholegrain pasta are not my thing, and they may not be yours either. Do not despair! The good news is that you can still have your spaghetti or white rice if you really want them - the trick is to combine them with protein-rich foods, which slow down the digestion of carbs. For example, have an egg with your piece of toast, a serving of salmon along with a baked potato, some ham or chicken with your linguine. Sounds better?
Oh, and it is time to bust an age-long myth: coffee and tea do NOT in fact help to wake you up. Caffeine may perk you up a bit, but it also induces a blood sugar low, which pretty much defeats the purpose. If you’re still playing poker at 3 am and need something to wake you up, grab an apple instead – it will effectively make you more alert (and for a longer time) than a cup of joe.
One last tip: to keep your blood sugar steady, make sure you eat often enough. Some of us need to snack every few hours, while others are OK eating every 6 hours. Learn to listen to what your body tells you: if you feel grumpy, tired and limp, it may be time to get a snack or take a break to eat a proper meal.
Keeping your blood sugar stable will help keep your concentration at peak level so you can pick off your more tired opponents as if they were fish in a barrel. And as an extra benefit, balanced blood sugar levels make you eat less and store less fat, so you can lose weight or maintain it much more easily!
