Can I apply Marx or Durkheim Theory to Internet Gambling?
I have a research paper that I need to write for my Theory class. My paper is divided into 3 Major parts to include:
1. Intro- Major Theme + my major theoretical argument
2. Lit Review- my research sources how they contribute to support my theme/argument
3. Conclusions summary strengths and weaknesses of my argument
I'm wanting to write about Internet Gambling with Poker Sites being my main focus. I want to argue for Internet Gambling. Some States have made it illegal to gamble on the Internet while living in that State while other States it's OK. Kentucky being one that has made it illegal to gamble online. They are wanting to tax it which is their main focus. They haven't found away to tax it so they make it illegal. Taxing the Winnings?
Any help would be appreciated, just need some direction and/or idea's. Maybe even some places to do some research on it.
1. For the theory section have a look at the refs below
ref 1:Cosgrave covers the variety of theoretical approaches to gambling
ref 2:Nibert uses the Marxist analysis - his focus in on the Role of the State in developing Gambling so his work seems to be the relevant to your own interests.
2. You will find that the most commonly used theoretical perspective is Risk Theory .the work by Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens, theorists informed by these earlier theorsts but applying their ideas to late modernism and the impact of globalisation. If you want to explore this theoretical model there are plenty of websites on Risk theory if you use google or google scholar as your search engine.
3. the key concept in Durkheim - of the increase in anomic behaviour in modern societies could well be useful - however most of the work connecting Anomie with gambling tends to draw on Merton's revision of Durkhiem's concept (for one example see ref 3)
4. so it looks as though the Marxist author is the one that most fits with your own preconcieved ideas ..that's Ok but it is important to fully set out the different concepts and focus within the topic when you do the theory section. Then in the body of your paper indicate why one or the other approach is most relevant to your research interest
...and summarise that argument in your conclusion ..but finish your conclusion with an indication of the further research questions that either, or both, of these theorecical approaches, and research studies using those approaches, have generated. ie You don't no need to have fully covered all the issues ..that would probably take a full post grad study
...but you do need to demonstrate your understanding of the relationship between the theories and the ways they
- focus your attention on different aspects of the topic
-use different concepts
-thus generate different kinds of research questions .

How to Benefit From Poker site reviews
Nowadays, there are numerous websites that are dedicated, entirely or in part, to running poker site reviews. On them, one can get information as to what they can expect in the various websites where poker is played online. They fill the need many potential online poker players have: the need to know, beforehand, what to expect from various online poker playing rooms. With this information, one would be empowered to know which online poker playing rooms are worth registering at, and which ones they would be better off avoiding.
In a way, these websites that post poker site reviews can be seen as providing the people who make use of them with a way to avoid having the painful situation of being forced to learn through experience. A wise person, we are told, tries to learn as much as possible from others' experiences, rather than having to learn through their own experience which would be a painful and often expensive way to learn. The people behind the best of these websites that post poker room reviews will usually register in the various poker playing rooms and have first experiences there, which they then document and present on the respective review sites for the benefit of the sites' users.
Now, as with most things in life, there are a number of things you are required to do if you are to benefit from the poker site reviews posted on various websites. In other words, benefiting is not automatic: it is not something you do just by virtue of logging onto the sites. A little bit more is required of you, in order for you to benefit fully from the reviews.
For one, if you are to benefit fully from the poker site reviews, it becomes essential to get as many of these reviews as possible. A single poker site review is typically not enough to give you a good idea on what you can expect from the poker room under consideration. You need a number of poker reviews to start getting a clear picture. Yet many of us, perhaps out of laziness, feel that we are informed enough to make good decisions based on what often turns out to be very piecemeal information. In days gone by, where there were just a few sites posting poker reviews, this would have been excusable. But in this day and age, where there are so many sites doing that, there is really no reason as to why one would do limit themselves to a single review's information. What is more, with the power of Internet search engines, getting to access these reviews is usually a matter of entering the relevant search terms and, instantly, you have access to the various reviews you can base your decisions on. Remember, the more reviews about a given poker playing room you read, the clearer the picture you start to get, of the room in question.
The second way to benefit fully from the poker site reviews is by actually taking the time to read the information contained in them. It is true that people don't read online, they skim. Yet when it comes to things like reviews, if you are to really make the most out of them, you need to take your time to actually read (rather than just skim) them. It sounds daunting at first, to be sure. But when you get to it, it proves to be quite easier, almost fun. Moreover, the information on the reviews will usually be presented in a casual story-like manner, which makes it very readable.
Closely related, as the third way to benefit fully from the poker room reviews is by reading between the lines to find answers to the various questions you are likely to have, regarding the various online poker rooms under review. Thing is, most of these review sites won't be able to tell you outright whether a given poker playing room is good or bad. It is usually left for you - to read between the lines – and make the decisions for yourself. Even where outright declarations that particular online poker playing rooms are either good or bad are made, it still falls upon you to question the motives behind the declarations, and make up decisions based on what you see.
It helps, if you are to make the best out of poker reviews, to ensure that you choose poker room review websites that are objective, rather than those that are nothing more than advertising wings of the various online casino establishments. It is easy to tell this, if you read between the lines as previously mentioned. How a particular review site presents its information can very quickly tell you whether it is an objective presentation or whether there are vested interests therein.
