Is it possible to make any real money by playing online poker?

The answer to this is the same as the answer to a similar questions: Is it possible to make any real money by playing poker online OR otherwise?

The answer is yes, but it is very hard. Poker isn't economically productive, so the only way to make money is for someone else to lose it. You have to overcome the 'rake', which is the amount paid to the casino (on-line or otherwise). In the US, you are also expected to pay taxes on large gambling winnings. Therefore, on average, far fewer than 50% of the players are consistently profitable.

As a general rule, playing strategy becomes more difficult with increasing amounts wagers. Therefore, players who are successful move to higher stakes and players who lose money drop down to a lower level. You need enough self-awareness to find a level where you are consistently better than your opponents and must avoid moving up to a level where you get hammered. You also need enough of a bankroll to make it through short term periods of bad luck. Many players have insufficient bankroll or misjudge their abilities at a given level and go bankrupt.

Personally, I have played on-line for over a year, and with sign up bonuses, I have made a few thousand dollars so far. However, I have probably played so many hours that I am far below the minimum wage for the hours that I have spent.

How to Make Money Writing Online

Unless you’re a proven academic writer, you’re never going to make money writing for websites like Elance.  There is too much competition, and the best you can realistically expect to make is $3 per 500 words is you’re lucky.

I found out however that there are literally thousands of sites in the poker and gaming industry looking for writers.  You’re probably thinking, “I don’t know anything about poker”.

The truth is however, learning poker and writing articles based on information on the internet is so easy.  Most poker websites, or affiliates as they like to call themselves, will pay no less than $10 per 500 words.  The industry standard is around $12-$20 per 500 words, and it takes me personally around 30 minutes to write such an articles.  The range of articles also includes news stories, poker strategy, and poker room reviews.

For those estranged to poker, writing news articles is extremely easy and requires minimal knowledge.  If you write 10 articles per day, that’s around $150 peer day – which isn’t bad.

To find these websites and work, just email as many poker sites as you can.  Type in poker news in Google, and email anything from 50+ sites to see if they have spare work.
