Question about converting a coffee table into a poker table?

I've been wanting to build a poker table for awhile now, but I'm short on money.

My neighbor gave me a free coffee table, which I want to convert into a nice looking poker table.

I searched google, this is a close resemblance of the coffee table I am working with. I labeled the two parts I will be asking about as A and B.

On A, I photoshopped it to be lighter. I want to remove this center piece, stretch poker felt over it and staple with a staple gun, then glue it back in place.

On part B, and the rest of the piece, I want to re-stain it to have a cherry-finish, the one I have is a dull brown.

I guess my question is, how do I strip the center piece out without ruining the table?

Thanks
I would like it to look like this when its done...

If you ruin the centerpiece, it's no big deal. Once you pull that piece out, chances are, it'll never fit flush again. Besides, I would think you would have to make some modifications to add the felt. Assuming the inlay is snug, you're going to have a hard time adding felt and getting it to fit back into place. What you may explore is trying to remove the center piece intact and creating a poker felt replacement. Use plywood, padding and felt, and build a separate inlay. This way, you wouldn't destory the original piece (aside from removing it from the table). Without knowing more detail, it may or may not work - i.e. your idea may work better than I am imagining.

For a completely different (and cheap) conversion method, just get the felt and make a cover for the table. Measure it out and sew in elastic and you can create a fitted cover. Find some padding to slip underneath and you're set. It wouldn't be as clean, but you wouldn't have to alter the table at all.

Building a Table Image (poker Face)

The process and ability to build a table image is one that’s not very well documented in poker literature and yet as most avid players know, the nuances of how you handle yourself at the poker table can really increase your ability to win. Your table image (Poker face) goes through a process of trial and error in order to archive a professional standard rather than following rigid guidelines. Your table image can be developed in single cash game circumstances. The key to a good table image is deception; you need to disguise the way you are actually playing.

In cash games, your table image can serve many aims, if you are going to be playing against the same players regularly you can attempt to learn their poker faces, cash games, also provide you with an ideal opportunity to practice. First impressions do count, and you may be surprised how long people will pigeon-hole you into a particular category or level of player from the first few hours you play with them. A good way to use this to your advantage in a poker game is to play loosely at the start, making sure that your hands are shown down. If the hand does not go to show down this means showing your hole cards to the table, specifically when you’re bluffing or making a bad play. Some people intend to loose some small pots early on in a session to create the image of a reckless player. The idea then is to change tactic and play very tight, whilst waiting for a big hand. You’ll be surprised how long it takes players to realise that you’ve changed your playing style and they will be queuing up to pay off your big hands for a good while.
