Limit is the most common betting structure. Historically, it has been the most popular form of hold ‘em found in casino live action games in the United States. Moreover, most home games benefit from the civility of limit hold ‘em. It is also known as fixed limit because the betting limits are fixed. At any given time, you can only bet in the single governing limit set for that street. Sometimes it is played as a kill game, wherein a kill hand is triggered when a player wins a pot over a certain predetermined amount, or when the player wins a certain number of consecutive hands.
Spread limit is very similar to limit hold ‘em, but a range for bet size is provided. It allows a player to raise any amount within a specified range.

Pot limit is a structure where the maximum wager is based on the size of the pot. In a pot limit game, no player can raise more than the size of the total pot. The drawback for this type of betting structure is that the size of the pot and the required bet to stay in the game can escalate fairly quickly. Thus, pot limit is not a favourable structure for newbies.
Finally, no limit is the most popular betting structure for tournaments, including most televised games and the annual World Series of Poker. In no limit hold ‘em, there is no maximum bet. A player may bet or raise any amount they wish, up to the amount that they have in front of them. In no limit, there are predetermined blinds and the minimum bet is the size of the big blind.
