The play begins with players placing out blinds and antes so there is an initial amount in the beginning of the game. The dealer shuffles up a standard deck of cards and each player is dealt two private cards face down, called the pocket cards. There is a pre-flop betting round.

Players may bet, check, raise, or fold in turn. The large blind has the privilege of last action and may check or raise the bet. The flop is then dealt face up in the center of the table and another betting round takes place. The dealer burns again and flips another card called the turn. The player to the left of the dealer begins another round of betting. Then the final card is dealt face up called the river. These five cards make up the community card. Players can now use any of the five cards in combination with their pocket cards to form a five card poker hand.

Then there is one final round of betting starting the player to the left of the dealer. Then the showdown is where remaining players compare their hands. And the winning poker hand will be awarded the pot. The player with the best poker hand wins the pot.
