Is it easier to place high up in a free buy-in tournament with say 2500 people in or is it easier to place high up in a $2-$5 buy-in tournament with say 500 people in it?

I'm an experienced poker player of many years and I still wonder this question myself. Assuming both tournaments are paying out the same % of players, I honestly think the 2500 person freerolls are easier to cash in.

I know statistically you're a better chance to win in the tournament with fewer players, but take the following into account:
*of the 2500 in the free tournament, approx. 50% of these players are going to donk out in the first 30mins-hour of the tourney, because they've got nothing to lose so the first few rounds are just all-in fests.
