Making the Linux switch?
Hey, I'd like to know what in your opinion are the best linux replacement apps of the following; Photoshop, Outlook, Flash, 3D Studio Max, and SciTE.
Also will linux run Steam (for gaming, I've already invested money in these games), Poker Stars, and World of Warcraft?
ANNND, what do you prefer KDE or Gnome, oh and what distro would be your favorite for a laptop! thanks!
SciTE is a text editor tailored for programming in various languages.. Java being the one i'll primarily use it for. It features a highly customizable work environment, and highlighting of syntax. And i know it's cross platform already, just wondering if you use something better
. Oh and I'm looking for an open source Flash replacement.
Photoshop <-> Gimp http://www.gimp.org
Outlook <-> Thunderbird http://www.mozilla.com
Flash <-> Flash
3d Studio Max <-> Blender http://www.blender.org
SciTE <-> (sorry, I never used it, don't know what it does)
You cannot run games on Linux. There are some, but they are open source and they don't look so well. Steam won't work. Neither will WOW.
However, you can install virtualization software that will emulate a WIndows environment and allow you to play at least WoW. Try CeDega or Wine.
I prefer KDE, but then, I don't use Linux much. Most users enjoy Gnome better for its simplicity.
If you are a power-user, Debian would be best. If not, Ubuntu ( or Kubuntu, for KDE ) would be a good choice.
Best of luck!

If you decide to try out online poker, the most important decision you have to make is where you’re going to play. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of online poker sites, and if you’re a new player it can be really confusing when you try to decide which one is best for you. There are quite a few factors that determine what poker site is best, including the site’s bonus, their software, their player traffic, their tournaments, and their stakes and games offered. We’ll teach you how to analyze all of these criteria, and make a good decision when you play online poker.
The first thing players often look at is the sign up bonus that the poker site offers. There are two components that go into a great poker bonus: First of all, the size, and second of all, the clearing requirements. The clearing requirements are the most important factor, because that is what determines if the bonus is easy to clear or not. Every poker site will list their bonus clearing requirements right on their website. Make sure to read the small print, because often times the bonuses have an expiration date or require a certain poker bonus code to redeem them. If the bonus looks like it’s hard to clear, and you’re a small stakes player, you’re better off choosing a different bonus.
One important thing that is often overlooked when choosing a poker site is their customer service and support. Nine times out of ten you’ll never have to contact them, but when you do, you want to be able to rely on a timely response. Most poker sites offer a FAQ section, email support, and phone support, but some go the extra mile and add live chat for players who want an instant response but don’t want to have to call in. If you decide to play at a smaller or lesser known site, support can be a huge issue, because some small sites have sub-par support, so make sure to look into this.
If you really want to play at an awesome poker site, you’ll want to win, of course! The best way to do this is to play at a site that has weak player competition. Here are a few hints for finding sites with weak poker players: Check out sites that have integrated casinos or sportsbooks. The players here are usually casino or sportsbook bettors checking out the poker tables, and often times they aren’t very solid players. Alternatively, check out one of the new 3d poker sites because the players at those sites are looking for an experience, not to make money.
