Where is a good place to purchase a poker chip set?
I'm looking for 500-1000 piece set for under $50 bucks. In addition, I want good quality chips.. not the plastic ones.
I'm not looking for casino quality chips. Just good quality for home games and I chip shuffle with ease.
You can't get good quality for low price generally. Try e-bay, you might get lucky.
Composite chips like striped dice ones are ok, but not high quality. They're perfect for a first set though and they're actually what I have right now.

Nexgen makes a decent mid range chip. It has a better feel than composite chips.

If you do buy them on e-bay, I'd suggest that you find some chips that you can pick up since they're very heavy and cost a small fortune to ship.
One thing you should consider is what you want it for. If you want it for a home game, colors don't matter as much, but if you want to use it for a tournament, you should have 3-4 colors, with more of the lower denominations and fewer of the higher ones. With a 1000 chip set, you should have 400 $5, 300 $25, 200 $100, and 100 $500 chips. If you go with 500 chips, I'd suggest 3 colors instead of 4. Some chip sets have 100 of each color, which doesn't really work well unless you flatten out your chip values quite a bit.
